On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the theme “Accelerate Impact” by honoring women who break barriers and inspire change. One such woman is Ann Mutuku, whose life is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the strength of inclusion.
Ann was born deaf and began her educational journey at a special school in Machakos before moving on to Mumias Girls for the Deaf. Her desire for personal growth led her to a beauty college in Nairobi, where she not only pursued her studies but also did sign language sessions for her classmates. Ann’s journey showcases her dedication to overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for herself and others.
Ann is married to a fellow member of the Deaf community, and together they are raising three healthy children. Understanding the importance of communication, the family took sign language classes to ensure smooth interactions within their home and community. This proactive approach demonstrates their commitment to fostering understanding and connection.
In June 2024, Ann joined Riziki Source, an organization dedicated to empowering persons with disabilities. She values the inclusive environment and the steadfast support of her colleagues. To further her advocacy, Ann introduced sign language classes for her team, held every Friday after lunch. Her initiatives not only improve communication but also raise awareness of Deaf culture in the workplace.
Ann’s story is a testament to the transformative power of inclusion and education. By embracing diversity, she accelerates impact in her community, showing that challenges can be transformed into opportunities for growth.
