Diagnosed with juvenile arthritis when she was just a kid, Diana encountered not only physical challenges but also the harsh realities of societal stigma and discrimination. However, she was determined not to let her situation dictate her life. From dealing with the intricacies of her condition to carving out her own space in the world, Diana’s story is a powerful reminder of how resilience and supportive communities can make a real difference.

Growing up in a family of six, Diana encountered her fair share of challenges right from the start. At just four years old, she was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, but it wasn’t until she turned eight that she received the official diagnosis. This delay had a significant impact on her early education, as many schools were hesitant to accommodate her needs.

Diana’s path to education was not smooth. She faced stigma and discrimination, which made it tough to find a school willing to accept her. Eventually, she found a welcoming environment at a school in Buruburu Phase 1. Throughout her primary education, she relied on a wheelchair, which added extra challenges for both her and her teachers and fellow learners. As she moved on to high school, she transitioned to using crutches, marking a big step toward her independence.

Despite the hurdles, Diana didn’t give up and successfully completed her high school education. She then went on to earn a diploma in Project Management at the Cooperative University. Her hard work and determination paid off when she received a scholarship from the Mastercard Foundation, allowing her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in International Administration at the United States International University (USIU).

While at USIU, Diana participated in life skills training as part of her scholarship program. It was during this training that she discovered Riziki Source, an organization focused on connecting people with disabilities to the workforce. Riziki Source offers initiatives like Jiandae, which provides thorough training in work readiness, soft skills, and career mentorship. This program empowers participants with the skills and confidence they need to land meaningful and dignified jobs.

Diana was lucky to be part of a group that teamed up with Riziki Source through the collaboration with Mastercard Foundation. She completed the entire Jiandae program, gaining valuable skills that set her up for the job market. A standout feature of the program was a six-month attachment, allowing participants to put their new skills to the test in a real-world environment. By a stroke of luck, Diana’s attachment brought her back to Riziki Source, where she now works in the Programs Department.

At Riziki Source, Diana plays a vital role in reviewing CVs for upcoming Jiandae cohorts, connecting with companies to create opportunities for people with disabilities, and shortlisting candidates. She’s excited to be part of an inclusive and accessible workplace that fosters her professional development. Diana credits Riziki Source for significantly boosting her life skills and hands-on experience, transforming her into a confident professional ready to tackle the job market.

Before joining Riziki Source, Diana found tasks like reviewing CVs or reaching out to employers quite challenging. Now, she handles these tasks with ease and communicates directly with employers, showcasing her expertise. Her journey has not only sharpened her professional skills but also sparked a desire to continue her education and make the most of her newfound abilities.

Diana encourages her peers to keep pushing forward with their education and to never lose sight of their goals, stressing that perseverance truly pays off. She also suggests seeking out organizations like Riziki Source, which are committed to empowering persons with disabilities. Diana’s journey is a powerful reminder of resilience and the positive impact of supportive environments in achieving success.
