Seeing Beyond Limitations

Martha Waithera Tsingalia’s journey is a remarkable testament to strength and perseverance. Even after losing her sharp vision in her second year of university, she didn’t let that stop her from pushing through challenges to reach her goals.
Martha was born with perfect vision, but during her university years, things took a turn. It started with one eye, and gradually, she lost her sight, ultimately becoming completely blind in one eye and developing shortsightedness in the other. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, doctors ultimately told her that her condition was irreversible.
Even with the vision impairment, Martha was determined to finish her education. After graduating, she encountered discrimination during job interviews, including one at a well-known bank in Kenya. Yet, she kept her spirits high and remained focused on finding a job.
While on the hunt for jobs online, Martha stumbled upon an ad from Riziki, an organization dedicated to bridge the gap between persons with disabilities and the workforce. She applied and was upfront about her disability, believing that her honesty helped her stand out as a candidate.
Riziki Source’s Talanta Bridge initiative is all about connecting talented persons with disabilities to potential job opportunities, working hard to close the employment gap. It promotes accessible and equitable workplaces through advocacy, collaborative partnerships, and training opportunities for stakeholders.
By teaming up with organizations like APDK (Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya), Riziki Source opens doors for individuals like Martha to find jobs that match their skills. Riziki Source is a valuable partner for employers seeking talented youth with disabilities in their workplaces. This collaboration showcases how Riziki Source plays a vital role in connecting talented persons with disabilities to companies that prioritize inclusivity. This is how Martha found and applied for the position she currently holds.
Martha brings a wealth of experience as a statistician, with 9 years in the NGO sector under her belt. Her expertise in statistical software and monitoring & evaluation makes Riziki Source a valuable partner for employers on the lookout for skilled candidates. Martha’s abilities are perfectly aligned with the initiative’s aim to break down employment barriers and promote inclusivity in the workplace. With her background in data analysis, database design, and reporting, she stands out as an excellent fit for organizations dedicated to providing equal opportunities, showcasing Riziki Source’s success in connecting talent with the needs of employers.
After a two-months wait, Martha got the call she had been hoping for—an offer to work as a monitoring and evaluation officer. She describes her workplace as both accessible and supportive, with the office providing essential training, travel arrangements, and resources to help her succeed. Martha is especially grateful for her understanding supervisor, who plays a big part in creating a positive work environment.
Martha emphasizes that disability should not be mistaken for inability. She believes that losing her sight does not mean losing her vision for the future. Martha advises people with disabilities to pursue their dreams, acquire qualifications, and seek employment based on merit rather than relying on favoritism due to disability.
Martha also recognizes that everyone possesses a talent, and if formal education is challenging, individuals can develop skills like businesses to sustain themselves, rather than depending on handouts.
Martha expresses her gratitude to Riziki Source for connecting her with her employer and commends the organization for its efforts in linking persons with disabilities to available job opportunities. She encourages youths with disabilities not to miss the Inua Biz challenge, as it could be a life-changing opportunity.
Martha’s experience of working with people with disabilities has broadened her perspective on life. Her story serves as an inspiration to overcome challenges and pursue one’s aspirations, regardless of any limitations.
As we gear up for the Inua Biz challenge, let’s take a page from Martha’s journey and gather support from our community, partners and donors to help more persons with disabilities chase their dreams, showcase their skills, and gain financial independence. Just like Riziki Source helped Martha find her path, the Inua Biz challenge is here to offer similar chances for budding entrepreneurs with disabilities. By backing their businesses, we can build a fairer and more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
