In the heart of Migori County, 1982, a star was born. Kennedy Okongo, who describes his upbringing as below middle class, entered the world as a healthy child, the youngest of six siblings. However, at the age of five, polio struck, paralyzing his lower limbs and setting him on a path filled with unique challenges.

The paralysis significantly delayed Kennedy’s start in school, which was located far from home. But fate intervened when a visitor suggested Joyland Kisumu, a school he could attend for a year thanks to a scholarship. He later had to transfer to a regular school. One of his main challenges was using pit latrines. Kennedy also faced discouraging remarks from teachers who, due to his physical challenges, held low expectations for his future, even suggesting a limited career path.

Despite the obstacles, Kennedy found support in his cousin. He persevered through school and later enrolled at Moi University to study Sociology. The university’s accessible classes provided him with hope and motivation.

After completing his studies, Kennedy dedicated his career to the development sector. He co-founded an organization that advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs). His passion for fighting for the persons with disabilities rights is still alive today. He then transitioned to Riziki Source, where he currently works. He feels a strong sense of purpose there and remains committed to the organization.

Kennedy believes that disability should not be an excuse for failure. He encourages persons with disabilities to strive and thrive, rather than rely on handouts. In his words: “Persons with disabilities will always be there, program them because society will never get rid of them.”

Kennedy is happily married to a supportive wife who does not have a disability. He encourages all persons with disabilities to pursue their dreams. He also acknowledges the importance of mutual support in relationships and highlights how his wife’s contributions to their household and family life have been invaluable to him. He emphasizes that people with disabilities, like anyone else, benefit from having strong support systems.”
